About

Dara Art Gallery is a Sudanese art gallery founded in late 1999 by the artists Rashid Diab and Mercedes Carmona at their house in Khartoum. They envisioned the creation of a space where artists from Sudan could professionally exhibit their work. Since its opening, it has been host to many great Sudanese artists, including Ibrahim Al-Salahi, Yassir Abu-El-Haram, Hussein Gamaan, Ahmad Mohamad Shibrain and many more. Of course, over the years, Rashid Diab and Mercedes Carmona have also had their work displayed in the gallery, and you may still find it today on display. In the early 2000s, Mercedes offered painting courses, and works created in these were also displayed during the years. In 2005, Rashid Diab opened the Rashid Diab Arts Centre. That space was then designated to further the opportunities for Sudanese artists that Dara Art Gallery once offered.

Since 2005, the gallery has been exclusively Rashid Diab’s private gallery and has been exhibiting his work from the 80s all the way to the present day. Over the years, it has inaugurated new exhibitions and receptions. As of 2020, the gallery has come under new management, and the works of more artists will soon be added. Furthermore, during the recent pandemic, there has been a re-cataloguing, archiving and restoring of Rashid Diab’s work. Many works from the 80s and 90s have resurfaced and are now on display.
